Who Was John Linnell?
John Linnell was one of the leading London cabinet makers of the mid to late eighteenth century, working from 28 Berkeley Square and supplying furniture to some of Britain’s most important aristocratic houses. Trained in drawing and design at St Martin’s Lane Academy, he became known for highly accomplished Rococo, Chinoiserie and later neoclassical furniture, including carved and gilded mirrors, armchairs, commodes and complete room schemes. His work is particularly recognised for its sculptural carving, refined use of satinwood, harewood and mahogany, and close association with architects such as Robert Adam. Because Linnell did not stamp his furniture, attribution relies heavily on surviving design drawings, documented provenance and distinctive workshop characteristics.

What Is the George III Period?
The George III period (1760–1820) is widely regarded as one of the finest periods of English furniture making. Influenced by designers such as Thomas Chippendale, George Hepplewhite and Thomas Sheraton, furniture from the period is recognised for its elegant proportions, high quality cabinet making and the widespread use of mahogany, satinwood and other fine timbers.
