China
circa 1760
Very rare ‘Chinese export’ , Oriental-hardwood gaming table, made in circa 1760. Probably made in the Canton region of China, the shaped top opens to reveal a well to each corner. The carving to the cabriole legs is quite exquisite, depicting lions-masks to the cabriole knees and ball and claw to the feet, and would suggest that the table was a special commission for a grand English or Dutch residence. Still retaining its original ‘paktong’ hinges, the gaming table has a rich walnut colour and striking figure.
