circa 1755 - 1765
Early George III 18th century period mirror with the original mercury plate.
The large leaf adorning the centre top is surmounted on an inverted leaf with bold acanthus leaf decoration above large 'C' scrolls to the shoulders.
The sides swoop down to an open fret plinth above out-swept stiff leaf carving. The bold 'C' scrolls to the bottom corners are raised on inverted 'C' scrolls with a centre motif enveloping mini scrolls and foliage.
The mirror was originally painted then at some point was gilded. We bought the mirror when it was gilded and then had it scraped back to the original surface. The mirror plate has always been with the frame and the frame is now showing areas of white paint and areas of some gilding. The effect and look is more of a natural stone look now. The frame is crisp and well executed and is undoubtedly the work of a London carver.
