Japanese
circa 1868 - 1912
The root carvings depict symbolic root vegetables such as pomegranates and pumpkins that have been placed strategically on a carved piece of drift wood. The depicted root vegetables are hand carved with natural dispositions and have been cleaned and polished with the pomegranate blooming an actual red colour.
The work of art from the Japanese Meiji period is unique particularly as its, presented as a set of carvings, these root carvings are a real centre piece.
In Japan, pomegranates symbolize fertility, abundance, and the cycle of life
The pumpkins are often said to serve as spiritual guardians. According to folk tradition, on Halloween night a portal opens up between the realm of the living and the spirit world. Ancestral spirits pass through this portal to join their descendants in the harvest celebrations.
Its obvious but the root carvings are much older and are currently unidentified.
