The coin-edged top concentrically veneered with burr, brown and straight grain oak, poker-heightened holly and unidentified tropical hardwoods on mahogany. The circular top is supported on a 'skep' pedestal above a quatraform concave plinth base with stylised lion-paw feet.
The wildly dramatic centre table is carved from solid oak with the top made with cuts of golden burr or pollard oak and other timbers.
The table is made by Joseph and Samuel Harper, cabinet makers and upholsterers of Broad Street, Ludlow. They are recorded from 1822-1835. (Dictionary of English Furniture Makers 1660-1840, ed. G.Beard and C.Gilbert, pp.399-400).

The fashion for domestic cabinet woods was particularly during the Regency period was promoted in the name of patriotism but actually reflecting the repeated blockades of British ports and sea lanes by the French throughout the Napoleonic wars.
