Fine early 19th century William IV period penwork and chinoiserie work box.
The painted rectangular top depicts birds of paradise set within a large, grand tree. The figures are finely worked and coloured with vibrant shades of blues, greens and reds.
The top opens to reveal the original red paper lining with a retractable section, made up of several divisions and two lidded sections. Most rare and unusual is the finely penwork decorated sides of the retractable box.
The main body of the work box is fitted with the original ebonised ring-pull handles and turned bun feet. The sides are slightly convexed and profusely covered with penwork decoration.
