The top to the cabinet is veneered in West Indian satinwood with a demi-lune crossbanding of kingwood, boxwood and harewood stringing and a satinwood crossbanded edge. The figured satinwood door opens to reveal a fixed mahogany shelf and is crossbanded with a sycamore floral etched wreath to the centre of the door. The purple-heart panels that flank the centre door are crossbanded in kingwood, harewood and boxwood stringing and this combination of woods is seen throughout the cabinet. The side panels are magnificent and feature a large centralised inlaid medallion above satinwood tapered legs on purple-heart toes. The two front centre legs with floral marquetry inlays are quite typical of John Cobb’s work and the use of purple heart can often be a consistent feature in his pieces of furniture.
