Early 19th Century Chinoiserie Tea Caddy

Early 19th Century Chinoiserie Tea Caddy

English

circa 1815 - 1825

Rare Regency period tea caddy of diminutive size.

The top flat section of the caddy depicts a man and woman in a garden filled with birds and plants. The top outer edge is decorated with penwork on a red background with painted floral sides on a black background.

The tea caddy top opens to reveal the interior divided in two with the original painted lids in contrast to each other. The left hand side is for black tea and the right hand side is for green tea, hence the contrast.

The main body of the tea caddy is chinoiserie front to back and decorated with figures on horses and figures depicting the picking of flowers and fruit within a natural setting. The chinoiserie is full of colour and detail and is rarely seen with penwork on red backgrounds.

The sides are fitted with gilt metal ring pull handles that depict two cornucopia cast into some stiff leaf work. The original handles are surmounted on a red background with penwork motif decorations above delicate gilt metal feet.
