Anglo-Chinese
circa 1775 - 1785
Rare 18th century George III period carved Anglo-Chinese Huanghuali tilt-top tripod table.
The well-figured rectangular moulded top with re-entrant corners is made in the solid and is supported on the original saddle and raised on a fluted baluster column and scrolled moulded legs. The table stands on finely turned scroll feet on blocks.
The table was made in China for export to the UK and almost certainly made for a wealthy merchant trading in Asia at this time. The table is influenced from the Chippendale director and is underpinned by this flavour of British cabinet making.
The density of the Huanghuali wood is such that the finish exudes patina and a natural sheen that is quite tactile.
