Victorian period 19th century tilt-top chess table.
The chess board is integral to the tilt-top table and is raised on thumb-nail mouldings for effect. The game board itself is 42cm squared with 5cm squares made with the finest West Indian satinwood and coromandel veneers to complete a striking piece of furniture. The table top edge has been profusely carved from solid oak, depicting acorns and oak leaves and is of the highest quality. This wide border is cushioned between two thumb nail moulded bevel edges above inverted solid oak finials.
The tilt-top table sits on the original oak saddle above a facetted column and is decorated with a solid ebony moulding in a matching style. This discreet detail is applied above an oak veneered baluster collar that sits on a facetted moulding. The large singular matching inverted finial to the underside of the four outstretched legs complements the carved knees and porcelain castors.
