Victorian period 19th century papier mâché painted tea caddy of important size.
This rare and important tea caddy of grand scale is finely painted on all five sides. The country scenes depicting high society engaged in country pursuits and the overall size of this piece indicates that its original owner was a successful landowner or merchant.
The slanted top opens to reveal three separate compartments for tea. The coromandel lids are fitted with carved and turned mother of pearl handles and lift off to reveal tin foiled compartments. The lock is silvered and stamped VR with the crown above and impressed MECHYS PATENT.
The tea caddy chest is in excellent condition with an etched mother of pearl roundel acting as an escutcheon.
