England
circa 1775 - 1785
A superb and rare pair of 18th century George III mahogany bedside cabinets. The flamed mahogany tops are fitted with a shaped mahogany gallery and finely cut-out carrying handles above opposing doors. The bedside cupboard doors are well figured and adorned with a mahogany moulding and fitted with the original gilt brass 'axe head' shaped handles. The 18th century Chippendale period mahogany bedside cabinets are raised on finely turned solid mahogany ring turned legs.
The 18th Century George III mahogany bedside cabinets are quite the style of Thomas Chippendale towards the top end of the cabinets. However they are not as fussy in design and my eye is telling me they are more of Gillow design, than a Thomas Chippendale design. The door moulding is more of a Gillow design and the finely tapered legs are the most prominent feature for me in terms of Gillow's work. The overall design of these 18th century bedside cabinets points to Gillows of London and Lancaster, however I have struggled to find drawings or sketches to back up this attribution, so for now it's a possibility. Nonetheless they are a rare find and are a genuine pair of 18th century bedside cabinets.
