Hepplewhite Period Floral Marquetry Games Table

Hepplewhite Period Floral Marquetry Games Table

In the manner of John Cobb

England

circa 1770 - 1775

The top is a purple heart veneer, boarded by a stunning floral decoration of marquetry, consisting of boxwood, green harewood set into fiddleback sycamore, inset with a tulip wood banding with boxwood and rosewood stringing. The full length mahogany lined frieze drawer with its original lock and escutcheon runs on solid purple heart runners. The finely tapered purple heart legs are banded with the best quality east Indian satinwood, with boxwood and rosewood stringing, terminating in satinwood veneer spade feet.

The marquetry decoration of this games table has some elements that can be associated with the the work of the eminent 18th century Royal cabinet-maker John Cobb.

The Floral marquetry and the quality of the inlays to this table are exceptional and Cobb was the master at marquetry. John Cobb was the only English cabinet maker at the time designing furniture with a French style, making a lower drawer as part of his commodes to form the apron, rather than in the usual way of incorporating the apron as part of the carcase. In fact you end up having a concealed drawer within the frieze/apron part of the table.
