Netherlands
circa 1800 - 1810
An early 19th century Dutch marquetry inlaid mahogany escritoire.
The mahogany top sits above a single drawer that is highly decorated with an inlaid centre panel which is flanked by two crossbanded smaller panels with brass ringed handles. The escritoire's fall is crossbanded and inlaid with floral scrolls and chequered stringing with further crossbanded sections that frame carved polished stones depicting flowers, birds and fruit. The fine marquetry inlaid cross-banding is repeated below to the cupboard doors and details more polished stone flowers.
The canted brass-mounted corners with now faint marquetry inlays are again repeated to the sides of the escritoire. The fall opens to reveal a satinwood interior with a leather writing surface. This exquisite escritoire stands on its original tapered feet.
